Janet Arkills

My multi-media art is about translation. Sometimes it’s easy - a child examining a bug on a summer’s day becomes a soft wash of watercolor, or pastels help me capture both the soft blur of a waterfall and its crisp, rocky edges. But more often, translating is tricky. I’ll paint a dusk scene in watercolor to no avail. I try it again in acrylic and better capture the nuance. Like translating a foreign language – it’s hard to express what is true in one language into another. Watercolor, acrylic, pastel, ink —for me it all depends. The uniting thread for my work isn’t mediums or subjects, it’s the habit of paying close attention and striving to honor what I see by finding a medium and method that best suits it.
